What a weekend it was in the High Country! St. Patrick’s Day is undoubtedly anything but uneventful in these mountains. I had the pleasure of volunteering at the High Country’s own Ski and Snowboard competition: The 4th Annual Daniel Boone Rail Jam hosted by Appalachian Mountain Brewery and Cidery (AMB). This event is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Daniel Boon Amphitheater, which is also home to Horn in the West. There was some crazy weather, with snowfall earlier in the week but then unusually warm temperatures the day of the event. But thanks to Appalachian Ski Mountain and all of the bags of ice in Watauga County, there was plenty of snow. Plus an impressive ramp built by our very own VPC Builders. “We’re excited to have unique events like this in Boone to go back and support unique places that we have here in the High Country that make Boone special,” event coordinator Danny Wilcox said.
I wish I knew the number of the turnout, but it was fantastic! The last count I heard was around 65 competitors, but I am reasonably sure there were more than that. The Daniel Boone Amphitheater at Horn in The West was packed! The lines for food and beer from our awesome local proprietors seemed never ending! There were tasty treats and beverages from AMB, Booneshine, Lost Province, The Cardinal and Farm to Flame. This family friendly event also featured $4,000 in prizes! The competitors came from all age groups and skill levels. Unfortunately the rain and lightning moved in before the final awards ceremony- but luckily they were able to finish the competitions. The winners are listed below!
Although the event was cut a bit short, that’s just NC mountain weather for ya. No matter how up to the minute our forecast’s there is always a chance it will shift last minute.Do you like winter sports, good food and even better beer? You will always find the best local and annual events on Vincent Properties’ High Country Life page. We do encourage you to follow our friends at AppSki Mountain and Appalachian Mountain Brewery and Cidery because they are up to great things all the time!
